[37] is the answer to people’s thirst for a full-length albums from Love X Stereo. Not one, not two, but four…
[37] is an ambitious project of Love X Stereo, which began in January 2017. The first result, their first full-length album [37A], resonated at festivals and radio in the UK as soon as it was released in May, 2017. And in just six months, their second full-length album [37B] appeared in the world. They simply released these obscure playlist type albums in their own unique way, to overshadow that constant pressure of having to release full-length albums instead of singles or EPs.
Compared to the previous work [37A], [37B] is stronger and more resonant. The album, which covers everything from personal stories to social issues, is expected to gain more and more sympathy from people. There are songs like, “A Revolution,” which has a strong message that revolution starts from itself, “Instalove,” a lyrical and dreamy song uniquely fits their usual style, “Le Grand Bleu,” which contains the desire to prevent suicide, “Pulse,” in honor of victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, and “Slipping Away” on animal protection and global warming issues. The album, though, cannot end on a solemn note, not in LOVE X STEREO’s world. As such, they close the record with the exhilarating “Slipping Away”, which is a CHVRCHES-like anthem that will lift your spirits. While Ko’s lyrics at first seem to be introspective, there is also hope and determination in her voice. This is a song about perseverance and overcoming all odds. About finding triumph in the unlikeliest of places. Sounds like the perfect song for the Olympics. It is also the one song that describes LOVE X STEREO’s yet-to-be-written story – an indie band that is about to strike gold once the world discovers their talent and hears the sublime little gem they call 37B.
There’s a lot to love on 37B. It connects with 37A perfectly while still going into a different direction. The subdued tone of 37B shows that Love X Stereo don’t always have to ride a fast tempo to compose excellent songs. “Deeper Than the Dark” is an example of that. The high energy tracks from previous releases are fun, but when they take their time Love X Stereo’s songs stick in your head for much longer.
What comes to mind when I say K-pop? A pumping bass, catchy melody, incredible dance moves and a minimum of six slim and needlessly sexy singers? Yeah, that’s what I thought too but as it happens, Seoul has a strong burgeoning indie music scene with a much richer musical tapestry than just Generation Girls and Big Bang. Love X Stereo is one of these bands, an electro-pop duo formed of Annie Ko (lead, synth) and Toby Hwang (Guitar, producer). Their music is similar to a lot of mainstream k-pop in its mainly synthesized music and a heavy use of disco rhythms and ‘visual’ sound effects but being free from the infamous k-pop ‘Bootcamp’, their music is allowed to have more creative expression than a lot of modern music currently coming out of Seoul.
Featured on South Korean duo, Love X Stereo’s highly acclaimed “37B” album, “Turn It Up” is a soft, tender, feel-good record with a commanding bass line that’ll make you feel like you are a maestro, and you are about to do what you do and make it look really easy. The vocal performance is like a gentle breeze on a warm summer day, and more arousing than body heat on a cosy winter evening with someone special. The lyrics evoke sensual, intimate feelings; as if themed around a passionate late night encounter between two lovers. “Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up; the volume of the night”.

[Thunder Kiss] This synth-ridden deliciousness is hella ’80s-inspired, but it actually came out on Love X Stereo’s 2017 album 37B. It’s delightfully starry-eyed with a beat that’ll have you shuffling across the room to get to your lover. Annie Ko’s cotton-candy voice is light and fluffy, the perfect match to Toby Hwang’s pastel fever dream production.
